At GradWalk, we specialize in preparing candidates for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), a standardized test that evaluates proficiency in English. TOEFL scores are a critical component of the admissions process for universities, particularly for those pursuing undergraduate or graduate studies abroad.

There are two primary formats of the TOEFL exam: the TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test) and the TOEFL PBT (Paper-Based Test), as well as additional tests like TOEFL Junior and IPT.

The TOEFL consists of four key sections:

  1. Reading: This module includes 3-4 passages, with questions designed to assess your comprehension and interpretation skills.
  2. Listening: You will listen to various audio clips, such as conversations, classroom discussions, and lectures, and answer related questions.
  3. Speaking: This section requires you to speak about familiar topics and discuss material from readings and audio clips.
  4. Writing: You’ll be tasked with reading a passage, listening to a recording, typing a response, and participating in an online discussion to state and support your opinion.

Preparation Tips

To excel in the TOEFL, consider these strategies:

  • Understand the Test Format: Get familiar with the test structure and scoring system to navigate the exam with confidence.
  • Set a Goal Score: Determine the score required by your target schools and aim to meet or exceed this benchmark.
  • Prepare Thoroughly: Allocate sufficient time for preparation to refine your English language skills.
  • Practice Note-Taking: Develop the skill of taking effective notes while listening to audio clips.
  • Maintain a Positive Mindset: Believe in your abilities and approach the test with confidence.
  • Start Early: Begin your preparation early to understand the exam format, take practice tests, enhance your vocabulary and grammar, and practice listening and speaking skills.
  • Choose Wisely: Pay special attention to questions that summarize passages to ensure accurate answers.
  • Cultivate Reading Habits: Use logical reasoning to tackle reading comprehension questions.

Key Updates to TOEFL iBT (Effective July 26, 2023)

  1. Shorter Test Duration: The TOEFL iBT will now be completed in under two hours, down from the previous three hours. This reduction is achieved through streamlined instructions, a shorter reading section, and the removal of unscored questions.
  2. Streamlined Instructions and Navigation: Enhanced instructions and simplified navigation will make the test-taking experience smoother, allowing you to focus on answering questions rather than managing instructions.
  3. New Writing Task: The Independent Writing task has been replaced with a “Writing for an Academic Discussion” task, where you will express your opinion within an online forum.
  4. Removal of Unscored Questions: All experimental, unscored questions have been removed from the test, ensuring that every question contributes to your final score.
  5. Simplified Registration: The registration process has been streamlined, allowing for quicker and easier account creation and test date selection.
  6. Increased Score Transparency: You will see your official score release date immediately upon test completion and receive real-time notifications of any changes to your score status.
These enhancements aim to provide a more efficient and user-friendly testing experience.
